Abstract

In the fourth quarter of 2011, the Taiwanese Smartphone industry's shipment volume reached approximately 50.89 million units and the industry's shipment value stood at approximately US$12.25 billion, growing 30.6% and 23.1% respectively in comparison to the third quarter of 2011. Market demand for the Apple iPhone 4S began to outburst in the fourth quarter due to customer expectations built up from the third quarter of 2011. Coupled with price reductions for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS, the industry's fourth-quarter shipment growth was mainly bolstered by iPhone series. On the other hand, Taiwanese braded mobile phone vendor HTC did not launch any flagship models to compete head to head with the Samsung Galaxy SII and the Apple iPhone 4S in the fourth quarter of 2011 and thus HTC witnessed a sharp shipment volume decline in the same quarter.
